Senate Ed Dives into Career Readiness Conversation

The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to take up three House-passed workforce and education measures Wednesday—each supported by LABI and aligned with the business community’s focus on strengthening career readiness and work-based learning. All three bills were introduced early in the session and each head to the Upper Chamber without a single vote against them.

HB 268: Expanding Early Career Exposure
HB 268 by Rep. Kim Carver (R-Mandeville) strengthens career exposure for younger students by expanding career exposure requirements for grades 6–8. Under the measure, K-5 schools will also be required to provide students with at least one career-related activity in each grade level. Earlier exposure helps students connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities and supports stronger long-term workforce outcomes.

HB 285: Expanding Financial Literacy Opportunities
HB 285 by Rep. Tony Bacala (R-Prairieville) allows school boards to partner with credit unions and banks to open student-run branches inside high schools. LABI testified in support of this measure, which complements ongoing efforts to strengthen financial literacy and workforce readiness through partnerships with the College Board and the broader business community.

HB 649: Streamlining Dual Enrollment Access
HB 649 by Rep. Ken Brass (D-Vacherie) requires the creation of a statewide application process for students seeking dual enrollment opportunities and ensures participation from all public postsecondary institutions. This change will make it easier for students to access college-level coursework, earn credentials earlier and build a stronger pipeline of skilled talent for Louisiana employers.

Together, these bipartisan measures reflect continued momentum toward connecting education to employment and ensuring students across Louisiana are better prepared for future careers. Advancing policies that strengthen career exposure, expand financial literacy and streamline access to dual enrollment directly aligns with LABI’s Program of Work and the LA Driven strategic plan, both of which prioritize building a stronger, more responsive talent pipeline. By supporting initiatives that link classrooms with real-world opportunities and remove barriers to work-based learning, these bills help move Louisiana closer to a workforce system that meets the evolving needs of employers while opening doors for students here at home.
