Thursday, critical legislation aiming to protect Louisiana’s job creators from predatory climate change lawsuits is slated for debate in the House Natural Resources Committee. LABI will be there in strong support, urging Committee members to keep Louisiana competitive with other energy-producing states that have enacted similar legislation.
HB 804 by Rep. Brett Geymann (R-Lake Charles) establishes the Louisiana Energy Protection Act to safeguard the state’s energy producers and users from litigation promoted by states like California and New York seeking to blame the energy industry for the alleged impacts of climate change.
More than 30 of these lawsuits are currently pending across the country. HB 804 does not just protect the energy sector, though. Speculative climate change lawsuits affect farmers, ranchers, truckers—employers that create jobs, support local communities and drive our economy.
As we have highlighted throughout session, LABI is actively working to enhance Louisiana’s energy dominance. Protecting related industries from these lawsuits will not only invite investment and opportunity but strengthen the industries that are the lifeblood of our state.
