“It’s never boring”: Newly Minted Chief of Staff Julie Emerson Joins Sounds of Session

In this week’s episode of Sounds of Session, LABI welcomed a very special guest, Julie Emerson, former legislator and now Chief of Staff to Gov. Jeff Landry. During a 30-minute conversation at LABI’s Center for Free Enterprise, Emerson reflects on her legislative career and her transition into the governor’s office, offering listeners an insider’s perspective on the administration.

LABI President and CEO Will Green joined this week’s conversation to provide context on how these efforts impact the organization’s work to improve Louisiana’s business climate.

Emerson highlighted shared legislative victories, including the elimination of the franchise tax, the flattening and lowering of corporate income tax, and the ongoing effort to remove the inventory tax (May 16). The aforementioned reforms have already improved Louisiana’s business competitiveness, moving the state’s rankings from the 40s into the 30s, and set the stage for future economic expansion. LABI has been a steadfast partner in these efforts, advocating for policies that make the state a more predictable and attractive place for business investment.

A significant portion of the discussion focused on workforce development—a priority that aligns closely with LABI’s Program of Work. Emerson emphasized the importance of building pipelines to Louisiana’s labor force, particularly through two-year technical programs and work-based learning opportunities. She praised the collaboration between state agencies and the private sector to ensure students are prepared for immediate entry into the workforce, highlighting the state’s commitment to pairing economic growth with career readiness.

Finally, Emerson shared insights on her new role in Gov. Landry’s administration, including efforts to drive infrastructure improvements, site readiness for new projects and continued engagement with Louisiana businesses.

This week’s conversation underscores a shared vision between LABI and the administration: advancing policies that fuel economic growth, strengthen the workforce and expand Louisiana’s competitive advantages in energy, manufacturing and beyond.
