The 2026 push to modernize Louisiana’s sales tax collection system arrives in the House Ways & Means Committee today.
HB 620, filed by Rep. Josh Carlson (R-Lafayette) provides a chance to tackle a long-standing barrier to business growth and deliver efficiency and fairness for Louisiana businesses.
Currently, Louisiana businesses must navigate dozens of rules and more than 50 local tax collectors across parishes, creating higher costs and compliance headaches, especially for small businesses. Out-of-state sellers, by contrast, enjoy a centralized system, putting Louisiana businesses at a disadvantage.
After South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., most states modernized—but Louisiana doubled down on complexity. Experts like the Council On State Taxation (COST) warn that this fragmented approach increases errors, reduces efficiency and serves as a major barrier to investment and economic expansion.
HB 620 is a Constitutional Amendment that, if approved by voters, would authorize the Legislature to create a single, centralized system—bringing Louisiana in line with every other state and delivering an efficient and consistent system.
It’s not too late to let lawmakers know how you feel—opposition has already mobilized to preserve the status quo. Contact your legislators now and urge them to support HB 620. We’ve done most of the work for you—click HERE to send them a short message.
Ask them a simple question: why should a handful of local entities outweigh the needs of thousands of Louisiana businesses? If you don’t speak up, they’ll assume the current system is acceptable.
