The upper chamber’s education panel endorsed three LA Driven-Approved measures during its Wednesday afternoon hearing, including a pivotal piece of our coalition’s workforce development strategy.
HB 376 by Sen. Beth Mizell (R-Franklinton) is another avenue to align Louisiana’s education system with the needs of the evolving workforce by establishing a statewide framework to expand work-based learning opportunities.
The legislation authorizes local school systems to create “career practicums” that integrate classroom instruction with real-world experience (in a controlled, legally-secure manner), while encouraging broader access to internships, apprenticeships and hands-on training tied directly to industry demand—a key focus for LABI. It also strengthens partnerships between K–12 schools, higher ed and the private-sector, helping ensure students are gaining in-demand skills.
Additionally, SB 376 supports the development of a stronger talent pipeline by giving students the opportunity to earn industry credentials, build practical workforce skills and, in some cases, receive wages while completing their education. By incorporating real-world training into the learning process, students graduate more prepared for a successful transition into the labor force.
In presenting her bill, Sen. Mizell reiterated the need to create pathways for every Louisiana high schooler, including those in rural areas who otherwise wouldn’t have access to business and industry—exposure that is so critical to student success.
Prior to the Committee’s move to report the bill favorably, Sen. Mizell noted that she will have clarifying amendments ahead of Floor action.
